Led by conductor Risto Joost and director Michiel Dijkema, this massive production comes to life for a single performance in the Kuressaare Castle Opera House.

Ludwig van Beethoven

Beethoven’s only opera, the dramatic masterpiece “Fidelio”, brings to life a timeless tale of love and political courage.The opera centres on the love and heroism of Leonore, who disguises herself as Fidelio in order to free her husband, Florestan, who has been imprisoned for political reasons. Ultimately, justice and love prevail. The opera compels with unforgettable lyrical pieces like “The Prisoners’ Chorus”, Leonore’s “Abscheulicher” aria and Florestan’s aria.

Giuseppe Verdi

Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” is a compelling story of love, loyalty and betrayal, where political intrigue and forbidden passion lead to an unforgettable finale – the lavish masked ball. Hidden emotions are revealed, and fate takes its course.

The Portugese theatre presents a contemporary production directed by Stefano Vizioli. The staging features striking costumes by internationally acclaimed designer Chiara Amalthea Ciarelli, whose work has graced the stages of La Scala, the Paris National Opera, and other renown venues.

This authentic performance of fado takes the audience to the twilight magic of Lisbon’s nights through a breathtaking fusion of the fado tradition and symphonic greatness. The evening will be led by the greatest exponents of contemporary fado: Cristina Branco and Ricardo Ribeiro, who bring to the stage the dramatic intensity, poetry and profound emotional depth of this unique musical genre. A unique chance to experience authentic Portuguese ‘saudade’ in a grand orchestral setting combined with the magic atmosphere of Kuressaare.

Bizet’s “Carmen” arrives on Saaremaa opera stage with a narrative defined by untamed independence and fatal passion. The story of a woman who sacrifices everything for the sake of freedom and love keeps captivating audiences around the world. Carmen has been re-invented on stage countless times over decades, yet her fierce spirit remains unchanged over the years.

The opera gala stands as a festival highlight, presenting a selection of the most beloved arias and ensembles in the operatic repertoire. Under the baton of Maestro Antonio Pirolli, great voices, a powerful choir and an orchestra come together. A distinguished ensemble of Portuguese soloists takes the stage: soprano Rafaela Albuquerque, mezzo-soprano Cátia Moreso, tenor Marco Alves dos Santos, and baritone Luís Rodrigues. Accompanied by the National Theatre of São Carlos Opera Choir and the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, the evening presents an immersive musical programme.

Sérgio Azevedo

Based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, this musical production blends narrative depth with vibrant, spectacular staging. The score and libretto are the work of Sérgio Azevedo, one of Portugal’s most prominent contemporary composers. Written with a light, humorous, and poetic touch, the production explores profound themes – freedom, life and death, real beauty versus artificial wonders, and our connection to nature. Recommended for audiences aged six and older,
